The Nimmo trade played itself out on one field. Nimmo had two of Texas's three hits.

Thrown outOne night's box score settles the Nimmo trade Nine plate appearances between the two of them. A trade is three seasons of Semien and five of Nimmo, and last night is roughly a thousandth of it.

The one thing

Ten months ago the Mets sent Brandon Nimmo to Texas for Marcus Semien, one for one, plus five million dollars. Nimmo had a full no-trade clause and only waived it after calling Jacob deGrom, who had made the same trip four years earlier. He was the longest-tenured Met on the roster and had been there ten years.

Last night both men played in the same game for the first time since.

Texas got three hits all night. Nimmo had two of them, and he scored one of their three runs. Semien went 0 for 5 and scored a run of his own on somebody else’s hit.

And Carson Benge, who was named in the coverage of that trade as one of the young outfielders who might replace Nimmo, hit two doubles, drove in a run and scored twice.

The Mets won 6-3, and every part of that trade was standing on the same field while it happened.

Any verdict on the trade, including the one I just walked you toward.

Nimmo and Semien came to the plate nine times between them last night. The deal runs three more seasons of Semien and five more of Nimmo, which is somewhere around two thousand plate appearances each. Last night is a rounding error inside it, and the fact that it arranged itself into a neat story is a reason to be more suspicious, not less.

SNY published a piece on this trade yesterday morning, one season in. That is the right window to argue about. One box score is not.

How we got there

The game, at Globe Life Field. Texas finished 3 for 29 as a team and 1 for 8 with anyone in scoring position. Nimmo went 2 for 4. Semien went 0 for 5. Benge went 2 for 5 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and two runs. Francisco Álvarez matched him with two doubles and two runs batted in. Sean Manaea struck out nine over six innings for the win, Kodai Senga finished it for the save, and Mets pitching struck out fifteen in nine innings.

The trade, announced November 24, 2025. One for one, Nimmo and five million dollars from New York to Texas, Semien to New York. Nimmo waived a full no-trade clause. MLB.com’s story that day listed Benge among the players who might take over in the outfield.
