The average club has between two and three losing streaks of five or more a season, and only about one team-season in nine gets through without one. Measured against the length of an interim manager’s tenure, the window is smaller still.

How we got there

Every AL and NL team-season from 1962 through 2025, 1,728 of them, produced 4,643 losing streaks of five games or more: 2.69 per team-season. 11.5% of team-seasons had none. The Mets have averaged 3.13 over their history, pulled up by the 1960s, and 2.27 over the last eleven seasons, slightly below the league.
